Lava Lamp Experiment

Our first try of Lava Lamp Experiment. We’ve been seeing this experiment online and we find it interesting and easy. So we tried it, too. Had fun doing it though. Cool! 🙂

We made two rounds of this experiment. We used red food coloring for the first round. Blue and yellow for the second one. The amount of oil with the first and second try were different, too. The amount of oil in the second try is lesser than the first one.

These are the materials we used:

  • Vegetable Oil
  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar
  • Food Coloring
  • Clean Bottle / Glass

You may use Fizzing tablets (such as Alka Seltzer) in replace of baking soda. Check this site for reference on how to do it using Alka Seltzer. https://www.sciencefun.org/kidszone/experiments/lava-lamp/

You may also check this site for Lava Lamp experiment using baking soda. http://www.sciencemadefunkids.net/experiments.cfm?Exp=9.1

The science behind this experiment -> The vinegar is denser than the oil that’s why it sinks when we pour it to the glass. The vinegar which is acidic reacts to the baking soda producing some reaction like bubbles.

Having witnessed the two lava effect experiments, which one has a better lava effect? 🙂 I guess, the second one is better! 🙂

Science is fun especially when doing it with your family. Keep on trying and exploring! 🙂
