Learning Musical Instruments

NOV. 28, 2020 – Our first day of piano lessons.

The teacher mommy becomes the piano teacher… Since the risk of getting infected by the virus is still out there, we committed to just stay here at home without letting someone to come over to our house for any tutoring classes. Where online tutoring is also an option but weighing the situation when it comes to online teaching an instrument, we’d rather be the teachers.

I have basic knowledge in playing piano as I took piano lessons when I was young. My hubby is a musician who plays different instruments. So with this, we settled to be our son’s teachers while things are not yet back to normal. I’m in charge of teaching notes and the basics of piano with the aide of John Thompson’s Easiest Piano Course Book which I bought online. Hubby is my support teacher.

My husband and me love music and we always wanted our son to like music, too. We saw his potential when he was still very young. He’s got the groove, beat and ears.

As we try to explore on various things, we also learn. Along the way, a good learning reminder for us parents that we cannot push our children to learn something when they are not yet ready. Wait for the right time. Understand and support what they love to do.

As of the moment, we let our child try the different musical instruments that we have at home and from there, we see what interests him. Until then we’ll learn which musical instrument he’ll have to focus on.

But one of the biggest challenges we have is my son loves to play drums and we don’t have a bigger space for a drum set. So here comes the space constraint and probably financial challenges for a bigger space/house. But we are praying and hoping. Nothing is impossible with God. Maybe someday my son and I can play drums in our bigger space. πŸ™‚ By the way, I love playing drums, too.

Currently, we are learning piano, kalimba and at times, ukelele. πŸ™‚

We are progressing… My son’s playing Mary Had a Little Lamb in keybaord and kalimba…

When frustration hits us back, remember to press toward our goal of learning and loving what we are doing. Continue to move forward and ask grace from God to give us all patience and love. πŸ™‚

I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
